Diet and Skin Cancer
A report in the Sept issue of Skin and Allergy News showed the patients previously diagnosed with a squamous cell carcinoma of the skin had a 54% reduction in squamous cell carcinoma risk if they had a diet rich in leafy green vegetables. They reported no change in risk for patients with basal cell carcinoma.
They reported a break down of the diets into a meat / fat group diet and vegetable / fruit pattern which also included fish. I would like to see how they stratified the results to identify that it was related specifically to leafy green vegetable. There have been some controversial reports that diets higher in omega 3 than omega 6 fats have less reports of skin cancer. Omega 3 fats are found higher in fish whereas meats have more omega 6 which perhaps could be another factor in what they saw in this report.
What isn’t under debate is that proper sun protection and sun avoidance especially in those people already diagnosed with skin cancer is absolutely essential. This has been shown to reduce the risk of skin cancer. Its great to have some data that shows that a healthy diet can make a difference especially in combination with sun avoidance and protection.

Wild fish especially cold salt water fish are high in omega 3 but farm raised fish are not. They like the feed lot cattle are high in omega 6. So be sure to look at the source of the fish you purchase
Hey Bill,
Good point, there is no comparison between farm raised salmon and wild salmon when it comes to omega 3. Check out my article entitled
